Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence ACTIVISM (SARVA) Month Events

April 12th: Through Our Eyes at the Ethnic Cultural Theatre 4:30-6:00pm
*A collaborative event featuring a documentary film, spoken word, and other performances that bring light and give a voice to experiences with sexual assault relationship violence in underrepresented communities

April 19th: Take Back the Night begins at 6:15pm the flag pole behind Kane and Odegaard and moves to the Ethnic Cultural Theatre at 7:00pm
*A powerful evening with a solidarity march, open mic, performances, and candle vigil to commemorate survivors of sexual assault and relationship violence

April 23rd: Green Dot Bystander Training
*Learn what you can do to prevent power based personal violence on a daily basis. For more information, visit www.washington.edu/greendot, 10am-4pm, food provided

May 1st: Rock Riot Run at 10am-12pm in the E5 parking lot
*5k walk/run along the waterfront to support Eastside Domestic Violence Program shelters. Food, drinks, and jams provided. Register at:

-Silent Witness: life size silhouettes featured in Red Square that display the stories of people killed as a result of domestic violence

Statistics

  • 1 in 4 women will experience rape or attempted rape during her college career
  • 85% of rapes are committed by someone known to the victim (known as acquaintance rapes)
  • 75% of acquaintance rapes involve alcohol
  • 10% of sexual assault survivors are men
  • Despite high numbers of assaults occurring on college campuses, it is rarely reported: only 11 rapes or attempted rapes were reported to UWPD last year.
  • 4% of college men and 8% of college women were stalked in the last year
  • 7% of college men and 11% of college women were in an abusive relationship in the last year.
