Welcome to Fall Quarter!

This quarter is PACKED with opportunities to focus on your career development. Here are the resources available to you throughout the year, and especially in fall quarter, that you can use to get help on all aspects of preparing for your job and internship search, from a resume to networking and conducting employer research and more.

1. Workshops. The iSchool is hosting many, the UW Career Center is hosting many more! Workshops are tailored to a specific topic, like resume development or networking skills, and are often also offered online. Workshops are a great way to get good information on a topic and you can follow up with more specific questions.  Workshops are open to students from any iSchool program, just pick the topic that looks most interesting to you and show up!

2. Employer Information Sessions.  The iSchool brings many employers to Mary Gates Hall in the fall to talk to you about their companies, internship and job opportunities, and to share information on topics that might be useful to you, like building a great portfolio or being successful in job applications. You should attend these to network with recruiters at a company you’re interested in, or to learn more about the company if you aren’t sure about them or don’t know what kind of jobs they might offer. Bonus, they almost always provide food and/or giveaways! These are starting next week, and you will see them listed here on this blog and/or through the main UW Career Center events calendar, so get ready with your resume!

3. Drop-in Career Advising . Ask and you shall receive! I’ve been swamped with requests for appointments and time to talk about searching for internships and jobs, so you can drop in to MGH 370H on Thursday afternoons  from 3:00 to 4:00 pm starting Thursday October 4th. If the drop-in  times don’t work for you or you have a more complex question, make an appointment by emailing icareers@uw.edu.

Fall is a great time to get started on resumes, portfolios, and thinking about internship applications. Keep your job and internship search in the back of your mind, stay calm and positive, and you’ll have a great year of career success ahead of you! Welcome back!
