Business Cards

You have probably heard me encourage you to get business cards, and this is a great time to order them so that you’re prepared to give them away at a variety of events throughout the year.

Do I need a business card? It can only help you. Business cards are a great giveaway if you’re attending a career fair, networking events like Meetups, a conference, or conducting informational interviews with people over coffee. Business cards are a useful part of your personal brand, and serve to market yourself as an established or developing professional. You can design them however you wish in a way that’s appropriate for your personality, professional skillset, and industry, or you can take advantage of a standard iSchool design as well to brand yourself as associated with the Information School and the UW.

What should I put on it? Your name, email, phone number, your “title” (example: Student, Bachelor of Science in Informatics), your affiliation (University of Washington, Information School). You can also add the URL of your portfolio or your LinkedIn profile, or include a QR code that links to your website or LinkedIn. Other options include a tag line that says what you’re interested in professionally or what your skills are (Example: User Experience design and research, web development). Add a quote on the back for personality, or perhaps a line from a recommendation that you’ve received.

Where do I get them?  You can order iSchool business cards through ASIS&T right now! Go here for more information : http://students.washington.edu/asis/business-cards/. If you miss the deadlines for these or would prefer to design your own, you can order them through various online services like Vistaprint, moo.com, Fedex-Kinkos, and many others. Your business card should leave a fantastic first impression of you as a professional.
