Career Tips
How to spend your winter break
This time of year you’ll notice that job advertisements trickle down a little, as hiring managers and organizations take vacation time and focus on the close of the year. There are definitely still jobs and internships to be had though, so this is not a time to simply do nothing! This is a fantastic time to work your network and conduct informational interviews. You can use these meetings to learn about career options, job titles that you might want to look for, current openings at a particular company, and needed skills or classes in order to land the career you’re interested in.
Who?
Start by thinking of or making a list of people you know who have interesting careers or who work for companies you are interested in. Ask them if you can meet them for coffee and chat about a few questions you have as you think about your next career move.
Or, ask people you know if they recommend anyone you can talk to about careers at a particular company, or about the particular job title you’re considering. Professors, your peers, alumni, or family friends, could all be great sources of contacts for you to start with.
How?
Invite the person to coffee or for a meeting at a convenient location for them (their office might be a great suggestion), and think of the types of questions or help that they can provide you in advance so that you can make that part of your invitation to them. People respond best to inquiries that are specific, so give your interviewee an indication of what you want their help with.
