LinkedIn Tips

Now that you’re on break, this is a perfect time to be working on improving your LinkedIn profile! LinkedIn is only growing, and if you’re not on that bandwagon yet, you should be. It’s a fantastic way for employers and professionals to learn about you and what you can offer. If you have limited experience in the field you want to work in, it can be challenging to write your LinkedIn profile, so here are some tips that can help!

Tip 1: Write about yourself as if you already are the professional you want to be. Use language like “specialist” or “focused in…” to denote an area of strong interest even if you have limited real-world experience in that area. The advice to “fake it till you make it” applies here – project confidence in your subject matter and ability to do the work you want to do, and others will believe you capable of it, too!

Tip 2: Edit your headline to summarize your value. Don’t just list your current student status or your current job title, write your headline using 1 or 2 keywords for the industry you’re interested in pursuing. “Specialist in Taxonomy and Metadata” or simply “Information Security Consulting” or “Library Professional in Youth Services” all capture the essence of how you might want to be seen. The details of your education and experience will appear in the rest of your profile, so don’t worry about capturing everything in your headline. This is the teaser that will make people want to learn more about you  because they think you can solve a problem they have.

Tip 3: Focus on the value you offer. Write in your profile as if you are answering the question “why should I hire you?”. List relevant past or present achievements and outcomes of your work that demonstrate how you can add value to the employer of your dreams. Use keywords throughout that are relevant to your ideal position (look at job ads that interest you for some clues about which ones to use).

If you need help with your LinkedIn profile, watch for the Career Center workshops on social media coming up in Winter quarter, or talk to me (Janet) about reviewing your profile!
