What to do After Accepting a Job Offer
The job and internship offers continue to roll in! If you don’t have one yet, never fear, come see Janet and we can talk about your strategy. But if you do have a job lined up, here’s what to do next…
STOP LOOKING. Once you have a job offer you should stop searching and interviewing for other jobs. Let any other companies you’re interviewing with know that you’ll be pulling out of their hiring process because you have committed to a role elsewhere. Do this courteously, with language like “thank you so much for the opportunity to interview with you, unfortunately I am not able to follow through with the process at this time because I have received and accepted another offer elsewhere.”
Make connections at your new place of employment. Let your employer know you’re excited to begin and ask what you can do or who you can connect with to help you get ready. Is there a cohort of new people all starting at the same time? Ask the recruiter and connect with these people in advance if there’s a good way to go about doing that. Staying in touch with your new employer through these next few months will keep you fresh in their minds and will reinforce that you are the right person for the job.
Take a vacation. Before you start work give yourself a little break if you can, even if it’s just for a day, so that you arrive at your new role ready and refreshed and excited to begin working. You can use this transition time to either relax or to organize yourself before you start.
Have you accepted multiple offers or are you interested in accepting a second offer after you’ve already committed to another one? Schedule an appointment with Janet through iCareers. This can have significant implications to the iSchool and not just your professional future, so it’s important to talk it through with your career advisor.
Congrats on your new job!
