Career: What’s on tap for your Career Services in Winter Quarter?

There is a lot happening with iSchool career events in the next few months. Be sure you don’t miss any of the activity!

Career Advising

We are still in the process of hiring a new Career Services Adviser, and eventually an Asst. Director for Career Services.  However, you can still see someone for advising on you career-related questions.

Laura Schildkraut will be available for advising appointments beginning next week (January 12th).  Her appointments will be both in person and virtual, and you will be able to schedule them via iCareers.  We’re still in the process of setting up her access to iCareers, so it will be a few days before you can schedule appointments with her.

For those of you who don’t know Laura, she’s a lecturer for the iSchool and has taught INFO courses on Professionalism and on Women in Technology.  In addition, she’s taught courses in the Foster school and produced a television show on helping students understand various career paths.  Laura will be a great resource for iSchool students, so please take advantage of her expertise!

In addition to Laura, you can also schedule a career appointment with Wendie Phillips, Director of Student Services. Wendie has many years of experience assisting students with resumes, cover letters, job search strategies, and interview prep.  Her advising schedule is available now in iCareers.  Again, appointments can be in person or virtual.

Employer Connections Fair

Mark your calendars now for February 4th, 1:30 to 4:30 pm, HUB Ballroom.

This is the iSchool-sponsored career fair and the employers attending are specifically interested in meeting iSchool students.

So that you make your best impression with employers, we are planning several workshops to help you prepare for the fair.

Speed Resume Review Sessions: Get your resume reviewed at one of two resume review sessions.  These will be 5 to 10 minute quick reviews of your resumes.  Reviewers are a mix of iSchool faculty and staff and information professionals.  Come with an updated version of your resume.  If you don’t have one, create one NOW from the iSchool template available at ischool.uw.edu/current/career-services/resume

  • Speed Resume Review 1: January 14, 12:30-1:30 PM, MGH 228
  • Speed Resume Review 2: January 22, 12:30-1:20 PM, Bloedel 070

Career Fair Success – How should you prepare for the Employer Connections Fair?: January 27, 12:30-1:20 PM, MGH 134 (inside Career Center)

Led by Vic Snyder from the UW Career Center, learn what you need to do to make sure you stand out to recruiters at the Employer Connections Fair.

What Do You Know About That Employer?  Employer Research Session: February 2, 4-6 pm, MGH 066

Before you head to the career fair on February 4th, make sure you do your research on the employers attending!  One of the best things you can do to make an impression on a recruiter is to be familiar with their company/organization.  Join your iSchool peers in researching the employers attending the Employer Connections Fair.  There will be a brief presentation at 4:00 on tips for researching information about an employer.  The rest of the time will be open for you to apply those tips in researching companies.  Bring your laptop and your iSchool search skills. We’ll provide the pizza.
