Your Winter Quarter Career Search
Happy New Year! Now that we are moving in the new quarter, a new phase of recruiting starts now. While some students have already secured a summer internship or their first post-college job, there are still a multitude of companies hoping to find their next stellar employee. That employee could be you! For those students engaging in a career search this quarter, one of the first things you should do before hitting the submit button for an application is to take to the time to research the differences between industries where you are interested in working. Each industry such as for-profit, non-profit, and the public sector provide both attractive and not-so attractive qualities. A majority of information school students see themselves working at a for-profit company, but there are a number of opportunities and advantages that could come from looking beyond to a smaller non-profit or non-governmental agency (NGO). Take the time now to figure out where you fit best so you don’t have to figure it out years down the road.
Oftentimes when you are pushed into what feels like a time crunch for a job, people will apply for any and every opportunity coming their way. There is plenty of time between now and the end of the school year for anyone that wants a position to find one. As you continue to or begin to think about where you would like to end up this summer and in the future, one of the best things you can do is to research the type of company you would like to join. Any easy way to make sure you are targeting a company that will match your wants and needs, Glassdoor has compiled a list of the 50 Best Places to Work. A quick skim of this list shows that at least 9 of these companies have come to campus or will come to campus to hire students.
