Title: Pamphlet Collection Cataloguing Intern – unpaid
Department/Location: Bullitt Library, Seattle Art Museum
Staff Mentor: Senior Librarian
Learning Objectives: The intern will learn to catalogue pamphlets for the Dorothy Stimson Bullitt Library’s pamphlet collection. The intern will learn to do copy cataloguing and will develop research and cataloguing skills in pursuit of creating original cataloguing records for rare or unique pamphlets. The intern will become familiar with using OCLC’s Connexion platform to update library holdings and export MARC records. The intern will become familiar with EOS.Web, the libraries’ ILS, and the local cataloguing standards that are used. At the project’s end, the intern is offered the opportunity to create a blog post publicizing their work and the collection.
Intern Tasks:
- Assess pamphlet back-cataloguing collection for status (catalogued, uncatalogued; copy cataloguing or original cataloguing needed, etc.)
- Locate pamphlet records available in OCLC’s database and, with training from Senior Librarian, do copy cataloguing
- Create original cataloguing records, with training from Senior Librarian, in OCLC’s database where no record exists
- Bring records into EOS.Web and change/augment records in accordance with library cataloguing standards
- Process catalogued pamphlets and add to collection
- Promote collection with blog entry on SAM website at conclusion of internship
- Expected time commitment: minimum of five hours per week or consistent with university requirements for course credit, for at least one university quarter or semester (can be extended), scheduled within Wednesday-Friday 10am-4pm office hours
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of cataloguing methods
- Ability to understand and consistently implement standards
- Extreme attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
- Excellent research skills
- Ability to work with staff and volunteers in a professional manner on a variety of tasks
- Ability to communicate effectively to staff, volunteers and public
- Ability to ask for help and accept supervision and evaluation of your work
- Abide by the Standards for Museum Volunteers/Interns as outlined in the
Volunteer/Intern Packet
Education:
- Currently or recently enrolled in a MLIS or MSIM program or related field.
