As a home to more than 43 million immigrants and 3 million refugees, the United States serves as a country of many races, classes, ethnicities and abilities. For individuals whose native language is not English, or who have recently relocated to the United States, many barriers exist in adjusting to a new country. Cultural differences, low literacy levels, language, and healthcare are just some of the challenges these individuals must overcome.
This one-hour webinar will provide a basic introduction to foreign-born populations. The presentation will start with some background data about immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers. It will touch briefly on concepts related to cultural competence and humility and how to integrate them into your work. Finally, It’ll review the CDC’s Refugee Health Profiles and the National Library of Medicine’s MedlinePlus, HealthReach, and Specialized Information Services resources.
